Symposium 2 - Physical models, their place and their complementarity with mathematical models in order to optimise hydraulic structure modelling.

Symposium 2 - Physical models, their place and their complementarity with mathematical models in order to optimise hydraulic structure modelling.

The objective of this symposium is to illustrate, on the basis of specific projects, the way in which physical models are used today in conjunction with mathematical models when designing hydraulic structures. In order to illustrate the advantages of these two types of modelling and their complementarity, experiments in scale models or laboratotory flumes from EPFL-LCH, ARTELIA, IRSTEA, EDF-LNHE and CNR over the past ten years are presented and supplemented by expected papers from major European laboratories.

The focus will be in particular on the benefit of the physical model / mathematical model pairing in order :

  • to reduce the costs of the initial design of scale models and to optimise their use,

  • and to refine mathematical models, thereby helping to provide an effective tool for testing new hydraulic configurations, even after destruction of the physical model.
